Liver Function Test

Liver Function Tests

Liver is the body’s laboratory and is involved in numerus process.

Liver has 3 main functions to synthetise, remove and store essential body substances. Liver metabolise fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. Synthetise plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors. Is responsible for excretion (removal from the body) of bile, bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs. Stores glycogen, vitamins, and minerals and activate numerous enzymes necessary to keep our body function.

Therefore, Liver function tests are included in the basic blood tests and should always be consider as part of the general health check.

The Liver function test, or metabolic panel (MP) includes measurements of proteins and substances related to liver function.

The Liver function test, together with cholesterol, triglycerides and kidney functions studies is called Biochemistry tests or complete metabolic panel (CMP) and includes measurements of electrolytes, proteins and substances related to essential body organs and function.

Liver function tests help to determine the health status of your liver, by determining the levels of liver enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin in the blood.

The specific reasons to consider LFT blood testing, is as part of examination for the presence of some medical conditions like anaemia, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high triglycerides. To check if the liver is infected with hepatitis B or hepatitis C. For people with liver disease to see the progress of the treatment, to identify side effects of some drugs and to determine if your symptoms are related to liver disorder.

The most common tests performed to identify liver abnormalities.

Albumin

Bilirubin

Alkaline phosphate (ALP)

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)

Alanine transaminase (ALT)

The AST and ALT test measure the amount of enzymes your liver releases when responding to a disease or damage. Bilirubin test is used to measure how well your liver disposes bilirubin, and the ASP to examine the bile duct of the liver. The albumin test measures your liver’s efficiency in creating albumin. If the amount of those proteins and enzymes in your blood are higher or lesser than normal, that indicates that there is a problem in the liver.

Albumin

This albumin is the main protein that your liver produces and provides nourishment for the tissues and being the medium for transporting vitamins, hormones, and other substances to the entire body.

Normally the albumin levels are within range from 3.5-6.0 (g/dL), but when a person is suffering from poor nutrition, infection, inflammation or kidney disease, the result can become low.

Bilirubin Test

Bilirubin is the waste product from the breakdown of red blood cells and high levels indicate liver dysfunction. Although there are cases where some inherited diseases can cause the amount of bilirubin in the blood to be higher, but the liver is still functioning properly.

Alkaline Phosphate Test (ALP)

ALP (120U/L) is an enzyme that is found in the liver, bile duct and bone and when the levels of ALP are high, indicates blockage of the bile, liver inflammation or bone disease.

High levels of ALP are common in children and pregnant women.

Aspartate aminotransferase test (AST)

AST is an enzyme that is found in the heart, liver, muscle, and other parts of the body. AST is measured alongside ALT since the levels of AST are not specific for the damage of the liver.

If there is a damaged in the liver AST is being released to the bloodstream, so AST levels are high.

Alanine Transaminase test (ALT)

ALT is always used by the body for the metabolism of protein. Damage in the liver can cause ALT to be released into the blood and increases the level of ALT.
